Spiritual disciplines don’t make us grow– that’s the Holy Spirit’s job. However, the disciplines– or better yet, “intimacy building practices”– put us in a place and posture where we can most readily hear the Father’s love for us anew every day.

Likewise, the disciplines aren’t just “things we do to connect to God.” More importantly, they’re an expression of the grace God has already give us– and an expression of the desire to go deeper into the restored relationship we now have with God. In a sense, through intimacy-building practices… we preach God’s goodness and truth to ourselves, even when we are unable to feel it. We know our hearts grow cold all too easily. But by dedicating time to focus on God’s presence, we acknowledge our desire to truly know God better and to allow Him to transform our hearts.
