Just as the Israelites relied on the King of Assyria to be their shield and protector, him with all his might and power, we rely on the things of this world, and oh how promising they seem. People. Relationships. Status. Power. Money. All things that the world tells us will ensure victory. Satisfaction. Pleasure. Happiness. Serenity.
But just as the King of Assyria turned on Israel, desiring to enslave them and steal their land for his own empire, all the alluring things of this world are really the very things that seek to destroy us. They steal our joy. They steal our time. They steal our peace. They steal our purpose in life. They steal us from a right relationship with our Creator!
In that day, the remnant of Israel, the survivors of the house of Jacob, will no longer rely on him who struck them down but will truly rely on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel. A remnant will return, a remnant of Jacob will return to the Mighty God.
There is hope for Israel. Hope for you and me. Though our righteous acts are as filthy rags, the blood of Christ can break the bonds of sin, cast of the blinders from our eyes, and restore us to a right relationship with Him.
Oh how I feel like Israel, with this wandering heart of mine…
